Sometimes it’s difficult to wade through the many lists of lodges and areas to visit in Kenya. To help build your perfect safari, we are have shared some safari ideas visiting places that you can book through our lodge, which will compliment your stay here. They even include special discounts and offers for El Karama guests to help keep your costs down!

Transport & Travel Links

Kenya is a vast country with roads and sign posts of varying quality! You have the choice of organizing a traditional road safari or you can use the highly efficient domestic flights and charters that move around the country every day. Here are some links to help you in your planning.

Car Hire

There are several car hire companies operating in Kenya. Contact Uniglobe – Let’s Go Travel and Sunworld Safaris for more information on how to hire vehicles safely in this country.

Domestic Flights

Kenya’s busy tourism sector has ensured that we have great flying links in most parts of this country. Our nearest airport is Nanyuki Civil Airstrip, just one hour from the lodge. We can arrange transfer cars to meet you of your flight, bringing you to us in an hour.

Safarilink and Air Kenya: have up to three flights a day to Nanyuki from Nairobi, Wilson aiport and other areas. This can be the perfect way to move between El Karama and your other destinations if you want to maximize your time in each place.

Charter

Nanyuki is home to Tropic Air Kenya, a private charter company that has fixed wing aeroplanes and helicopters for those of you who like to cut the fuss and travel in serious style. Visit their website for more information Tropic Air Kenya.

Regional information

Laikipa was named one of the Top 50 places in the world to visit by the New York Times in 2014. This family is a founder members of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum – visit their website www.laikipia.org to find out more about what’s happening in the area. Have a look at the Laikipia Eco Guide (illustrated by Lavinia Grant herself) to get an introduction into the flora, fauna and history of this area.

Reading material

We have a rich supply of reading material here at the lodge including the Kingdon East African Mammals guide, Fanshaw and Stephenson’s Birds of East Africa and our very own Lavinia Grant’s natural history memoirs “A Small Piece of Africa” and  “On a Kenya Ranch” (available for sale in our shop). All of these books will provide you with a definitive understanding of the wildlife, birds and people found in this habitat!
