Lodge Accommodation – El Karama Eco Lodge

You will sleep in airy cottages made of stone, wood, thatch and canvas. We have six in total, each varying in size and feel. All except one are ensuite with large baths made from black river stone and woodwork crafted by the lodge carpenter.

All are lovingly put together using materials found here, furniture made by our carpenter and soft furnishings using hand–crafted recycled materials. The cottages have electricity (solar) for lighting and hot water, flushing toilets and bath/showers.

All the bandas have a spacious central room with a double bed (one is a twin), covering in mozzie nets, a seating area with a small table for writing, furniture for storing/hanging clothes and an ensuite bathroom with a large stone bath (and overhead shower) that you can sink into after a long day out. Bandas have their own verandas for reading and star gazing. They all over look onto the river.

This cottage was built with families and small groups in mind. With a large double bed that could fit four, two single beds and sofa, it is ideal for those wanting to stay together. For additional privacy, we’ve built the bathroom a step away. Like the bandas it has a large stone bath and shower with an open window looking directly onto the river – if you’re quiet you may see African Finfoot or Hippo moving down river!

Hobbit House

This cottage is our largest. It has two bedrooms: the master bedroom has a large double bed fit for a king, two tree house floors with single beds for children over 8 years and a living area with a sofa and armchairs. The second bedroom is smaller with two twin beds and a round glass window for game viewing. Look out for genet cats, they seem to love this part of the lodge! The bathroom is large, with a river-facing bath and a separate shower. There is a lot of additional space around this cottage for kids to run and explore.

We are delighted to introduce the river tents: a new addition to our intimate eco-lodge. Designed as a little sister camp to the main lodge, these beautiful two- room safari tents are located along the river from the main lodge. Directly opposite an intricate web of wild game tracks where iconic species such as reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, bushbuck and even elephant can stroll by the views are magical.

Imagine sitting with your morning cup of coffee as the morning sun glows on the fever trees and watching giraffe peacefully browse only a few meters away.

With wildlife lovers in mind we have created these tents for the following use:

  • A private camp for guests seeking even more privacy
  • Additional rooms for the lodge in busy periods
  • A new option for returning clients to enjoy
  • Long stay rooms for professional photographers or naturalists looking for a bush base
The Tents

Each tent has two rooms: the main bedroom and an adjoining room, which can either be set up as a dressing room for a couple or if there are children in the group, a bedroom. All tents are powered with solar electricity for 24 hours a day including charging points for cameras and laptops/devices. With a star gazing veranda, comfy deck chairs and a hammock overlooking the river, the tents are the perfect option for those wanting a little less fuss and a little more privacy.

Ensuite to the tents are the bush showers. Open overhead with grass walling around them and beautifully hand crafted stone flooring quarried from the ranch, these gorgeous outdoor showers are positioned directly under enormous fever trees and give you the feeling of peace that only El Karama can give!

Both tents have separate bathrooms with a flushing toilet, hand-washing sink, mirror and overhead lighting.

The camp has an open fire pit overlooking the river for sundowners.

Please contact us for further information on rates and packages for these tents.

Food & Drink

All our food is home-made, 90% is home-grown in our organic garden at the farm HQ and most of the meat is locally sourced. All meals are hearty and clean, full of herbs, fresh vegetables and salads and lots of flavour. You can expect a full cooked breakfast, buffet lunches, afternoon tea and a three course meal in the evening – we promise you won’t go hungry!

Using charcoal ovens, our cook produces freshly baked rosemary breads, shortbread cookies and cakes for tea. You are welcome to come to the kitchen to see what we’re up to and to learn about “bush” cooking styles.

We can cope with special diets including gluten free, so make sure you let us know when you book.

We have a fully stocked bar with beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks. We have fairly straightforward choices, we’re not pretending to offer the height of sophistication here, but we do make sure we always have enough! Ask for a “dawa” to keep you warm on the cooler evenings.

We also offer fresh juices and herbal teas straight from Sophie’s own garden. Being half French she will ensure there are always “Tisanes” available should you want to take your tea to bed in the evening.
